Rúben Neves, the Portuguese midfielder for Al Hilal, has suffered a severe allergic reaction while on international duty with Portugal and is set to miss the rest of the season.
The incident occurred during training at the National Olympic Centre in São Paulo, Brazil, where Neves was reportedly experiencing symptoms such as difficulty breathing, swelling of the face and lips, and hives.
A team doctor immediately administered an epinephrine injection, which helped to relieve some of the symptoms but did not fully alleviate the severity of the reaction. Neves was taken to hospital for further treatment, where he remained until his condition stabilized.
Neves, who is currently playing for Al Hilal, is said to be suffering from anaphylaxis, a life-threatening allergic reaction that can cause respiratory failure or even death if left untreated.
It is believed that the reaction was caused by a medication Neves was taking for a bacterial infection called Strep A. The medication,Premier League Focus known as amoxicillin, contains penicillin, which is a common allergen for many people.
In a statement released by Al Hilal, the club's president, Ahmad Al-Khalifa, expressed his concern about Neves' situation and praised the efforts of the medical staff who treated him.
"We are deeply saddened by the news of Rúben's reaction and are sending our best wishes to him and his family," Khalifa said. "We will do everything we can to support him and help him recover as quickly as possible."
The incident highlights the importance of allergy testing before taking any medication, especially those containing antibiotics. It also serves as a reminder of the potential dangers of allergic reactions and the need for prompt medical attention when they occur.
As Neves recovers, his teammates have been supporting him through this difficult time. They have posted messages of encouragement and well-wishes on social media, expressing their hope that he will make a full recovery.
For now, it seems that Neves' involvement with Al Hilal may come to an end for the remainder of the season. The club has confirmed that he will be unavailable for selection until he returns to full health.
This incident serves as a stark reminder of the importance of being aware of one's allergies and the need for regular allergy testing. It also highlights the urgent need for more research into the causes of allergic reactions and the development of new treatments to prevent them.
